These are foam blocks for kayaks.  They are designed to have the kayak upright on top of the car…..but will also work with the kayak upside down on top of the car.  Two of these and also a pair of NRS straps is really all you need if you have cross bars on top of your car.  They can also be used without cross bars if the roof can handle the weight.  A pair of bow/stern lines are an important addition to your rack, especially if the boat is long and or it is windy.  The American Canoe association always recommends 4 points of contact to the vehicle.
